The Arts & Disability Forum (ADF) was formed in 1993 by a group of like-minded people who aspired to create a forum for people with disabilities in the arts.   The Forum exists to facilitate the empowerment of people with disabilities through the development of Arts and Disability culture, promoting equal access to mainstream arts for people with disabilities (as both consumers and participants) and campaigns for increased opportunities in arts education, training and employment.

We  work alongside the Arts Councils (both North and South), community groups, artists with disabilities and the mainstream arts sector to work towards increasing opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in the arts and other cultural activities.

The Arts & Disability Forum is a non-profit making voluntary organisation and aims to provide:

-  Information to people with disabilities and organisations – both internal and external to the arts sector.

-  A body that advocates on behalf of people with disabilities in the arts sector.

-  A networking, developmental and co-ordinating body.

-  A campaigning body aiming to initiate and develop campaigns to achieve the objectives.

Definition of a Person with a Disability

“A person who has a condition caused by physical, mental or sensory impairment, which results in loss or limitation of opportunities to take part in the community on an equal level with others, due to physical and social barriers.”

The Arts & Disability Forum is sponsored by the Arts Council NI and Belfast City Council. The Arts & Disability Awards Ireland bursary programme is funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaion.
