Five Northern Ireland groups need your vote… <http://lists.visualartists.ie/lt/t_go.php?i=494&e=NTAxOQ==&l=-http–visualartists.ie/news/five-northern-ireland-groups-need-your-vote/>

Five Northern Ireland groups need your vote as they are about to go head to head with other National Lottery-funded projects from across the UK in the semi-finals of The National Lottery Awards 2011. The Awards recognise the difference that Lottery-funded projects – both big and small – make to local communities.

The semi-finalists have been shortlisted for the big difference they have made with Lottery money, and people in Northern Ireland are being urged to cast a vote, from Tuesday 31 May, to help them make it through to the final.

Details on The Arts Council Northern Ireland website <http://lists.visualartists.ie/lt/t_go.php?i=494&e=NTAxOQ==&l=-http–www.artscouncil-ni.org/news/2011/new27052011.html>

The Royal College of Art is the only entirely postgraduate institution of university status devoted to teaching, learning, research and practice in art, design and communication. The College has a long history of achievement in art and design education, numerous eminent graduates and a remarkable record of graduate employment.

From Autumn 2012, all four Programmes of the Fine Art School of the Royal College of Art will be housed in new, purpose-built facilities at the Battersea campus. The RCA is now seeking to appoint to the position of Dean of Fine Art, to head the School and provide academic leadership, vision and direction.

The RCA is keen to consider applications from practising artists with a strong record of exhibiting with leading art schools, museums and galleries internationally; experienced curators in the field of Fine Art as well as academic managers and researchers. Whatever their practice, fundamental will be their ability to define and ‘seed’ a new culture of Fine Art in Battersea underpinned by practice based research. The role of Dean requires a minimum commitment of 3 days a week.

The Combihne project was developed over ten years ago. It brought together four hospitals, three councils and two communities. Together they lobbied for the development of a new hospital. As part of the new hospitals tenth anniversary a commissioned artwork is planned.

Combihne is working with Arts Care, a leading arts and health charity, to commission a visual artist to create and develop an artwork. The work will be informed by ‘togetherness’ and in particular the nine organisations and communities that came together over ten years ago within the Combihne project. The involved groups were Coleraine Hospital, Dalriada Hospital, Robinson Hospital and the Route Hospital, Coleraine District Council, Ballymoney District Council, Moyle District Council, and perhaps most importantly this extensive project brought the whole of the wider community together. Combihne objectives were finally fulfilled when the new Causeway Hospital was opened in 2001.

The project not only achieved a new hospital for the causeway area, but also national recognition. Therefore it is felt that an appropriate artwork should be commissioned and be sited in the Causeway Hospital to celebrate the projects success. The artwork must be able to engage patients, visitors and staff therefore it is important that the work is suitable for a hospital setting.

The commissioned artist will be experienced in delivering projects and can demonstrate their ability to facilitate high quality outcomes working with a specific professional brief and within the deadline. We are looking for proposals from visual artists that meet the aims of the project.

Tender process closes on 30 June 2011, 5pm

Shortlist and interview process completed by 6 July 2011

Work to be delivered by the 31 November 2011

The total budget for the project is GBP2850. This includes the costs of materials. Artist’s fees, artist’s research and design development, artist’s insurance, all fabrication costs, supply and installation, travel, and other costs incurred in the production of the artwork. The artist will be responsible for meeting all of these costs out of the total budget allocated.

Half and Half Exhibition – Opposites. Calling all Creatives.

‘Half and Half’ is a series of exhibitions set up by Lily Reilly and Kevin Corcoran, past Design Communication students at Cork Institiute of Technology. The first exhibition, a collaborative event full of unique and colourful work, took place in Cork City in October 2010. The second exhibition titled ‘OPPOSITES’ will take place in Cork City this summer.

Each exhibition has a different brief. They are non-profit exhibitions, and therefore no commission is taken from the work. There is a one off fee of between E10 and E20 (depending on scale of piece) for each piece which will help cover all costs. The exhibition encourages creativity and so the brief is open. The only requirement is that the work combines two opposites- be it colour, theme, discipline etc. Everything is left up to the artists, who can communicate with each other and with the public through the ‘Half and Half’ Exhibition Facebook page.

The development day for architecture is a collaborative initiative between the Dublin City Council and the Irish Architecture Foundation in association with the Architectural Association of Ireland. It is being organised in the context of Dublin City Council’s recently launched public art programme, which aims to offer artists across all artform disciplines the opportunity to make new artwork that engages with the city in different ways. This day is designed to focus on the artform of architecture and the potential for architects to create public art works. It has been conceived as part of a series to support practitioners from the different artform sectors to engage with the Dublin City Public Art Programme and support those interested in making proposals.

Each presentation will be followed by a commentary response by architects and artists, aimed to generate discussion and support questions and answers.
Sunday 3 July 2011, 1pm.

Although geared towards green fingered inventors, this three part workshop is perfect for anyone looking for an unusual and interesting introduction to electronics and physical computing. Learn about electronics basics in a 1-day, 3-part workshop. We’ll use an Arduino micro-controller to sense soil moisture level and automatically water your plants – using recycled parts where possible. Taught by Jack (http://secretspaces.org/ <http://lists.visualartists.ie/lt/t_go.php?i=494&e=NTAxOQ==&l=-http–secretspaces.org/> ) We’ve all done it – plant some stuff in Spring, promise ourselves to keep it watered and minded, then we go and get all distracted by life in the city and the plants go belly up. But by completing all three parts of our Electro Ur! ban Gardening (Auto Water) workshop, you can solve the problem once and for all. This smart automatic watering system will work from an outdoor tap or rain water barrel.

In order to make the workshop accessible to a range of budgets, we’ve broken it into 3 parts, which can be booked individually or together. Workshop does not include components, these can optionally be purchased for an additional amount.

Part 1: Construct a soil moisture sensor, intro to Arduino micro-controllers, build a simple circuit and take moisture readings.

Part 2: Intro to solenoid valves and Arduino, how to use Arduino to control a valve, build a simple circuit and turn water on and off.

Part 3: Learn about DC electricity, battery and solar power, and how to power multiple components with different needs. Learn how to power your Auto Water device or another Arduino project with battery/solar power!

+Billion- Online Art Journal: Text Call-Out <http://lists.visualartists.ie/lt/t_go.php?i=494&e=NTAxOQ==&l=-http–visualartists.ie/jobs-ops/other/billion-online-art-journal-text-call-out/>

Between June and October 2011, +BILLION- online art journal wants to publish texts by you! +BILLION- believes that there are lots of ‘art writers’ out there, and wants to use its online presence to prove this. Depending on the amount of texts submitted and quality of writing, +BILLION- is hoping that it can publish on a weekly basis between June and September. The texts will be ‘curated’ into themes which will be defined during the process of collating submissions.

+BILLION- is gradually defining a remit which can be read below. But this unstable remit is not set in stone, and will be expanded if a text by YOU provokes +BILLION- to alter the remit or just add to it. So, for the time being, +BILLION- is keeping the terms ‘criticism’ and ‘art writing’ in the same ‘pen’. The only parameter that +BILLION- has defined is the structure of the texts. For example: The ‘review’ is not subject to a word limit, but +BILLION- would rather the focus is on one artist, one show, rather than ‘double reviews’, or tangental reviews.

The ‘article’ is open and can be of any length. But +BILLION- does like the writer to stake a ‘position’, or argue positions against one another. +BILLION- is not anti-philosophy, as philosophy forms the backbone of the articles/reviews so far. In saying that, +BILLION- would rather that the art object is not just a stepping stone to a ‘Library’ of Philosophical focus and quotation. In the future, the archive of +BILLION- texts will become a hard copy. +BILLION- is a non-profit art project, so cannot pay for your texts. So as always, this is all for the ‘Love of Art’.

All submissions should be sent in Word format, with images and titles to: billionartjournal@ymail.com <mailto:billionartjournal@ymail.com> .

‘Bundle View’ Mark McGreevy

2 – 25 June 2011

Reception: Thursday 2 June 2011, 6pm – 8pm.

Mark McGreevy’s paintings are built in such a way that there is no clear approach to how they are constructed, drawings are made from several initial sources which are then developed through repeated addition and erasure, this continues until they have met a certain narrative that has previously been set out for them, this then is used as the primary material for his paintings. McGreevy constructs the paintings within a similar framework until the initial image collapses leaving a surviving residue or armature of the image/idea, this making and semi destruction helps to create a fractured absurdist narrative that opens itself to randomness, fragmentary consciousness and dissociative disruptions, mimetic with the fragmentary process of building a painting through it’s parts.

The paintings presented in ‘Bundle View’ are rooted in fact as much as in fiction, in the painting “Horrorscope” an approximation of a castle dwelling appears, taken from a real 17th century ruin that was grafted with centuries old Dry wall and relatively modern concrete onto the side of McGreevy’s local video store in the early 80’s. “On and On and On” contains a Rhombohedron similar in form to “Durer’s Solid” but could easily reference the physical manifestation of Proteus IV a nihilistic self aware super computer in Donald Cammell’s “Demon Seed” 1977. “Aim, Toggle, Sleep” has the shallow dusty space of a terrace mantle piece laden with collected bric-a-brac, traces of an individual’s taste or needs in physical form.

All these works contain the threads of the experiential, low/high cultural references and ideas of the personal subjugating the collective and vice versa, hopefully creating a subsidence of authority through absurdity, casting doubt on the paintings value system and validating the chance to rethink and change one’s mind.

2 – 9 June 2011

Opening reception: Friday 3 June 2011, 6pm – 9pm

Opening Reception: Thursday 2 June 2011, 6pm – 9pm

This Is Yellow, a recently formed group of visual arts graduates, take the theme of redundancy as a departure point for their first show together. Artists Jessica Conway, Deirdre Glenfield, Cally Higgins, Julianne Knowles and Joanne Reid draw on their individual practices to explore notions of excess, folly and superfluity. Working through the mediums of sculpture, text, digital projection, publication and sound, Block T provides a space for these diverse explorations to play out together.

Yvonne Woods & Susan Montgomery

8 – 14 June 2011

Opening reception Wednesday 8 June 2011, 6pm – 8pm.

Susan Montgomery and Yvonne Woods have created work inspired by the prose of the Canadian writer Anne Michaels. Their inspiration is drawn directly from Michaels’ 1996 novel ‘Fugitive Pieces,’ a profound meditation on loss and love, the dead and the living, and the indestructibility of the human spirit.

Taking Michaels’ themes of archaeology, memory, loss and the body as central concerns, the artists articulate these ideas through their individual work processes. “The shadow past is shaped by everything that never happened. Invisible it melts the present like rain through karst. A biography of longing. It steers us like magnetism, a spirit torque. This is how one becomes undone by a smell, a word, a place…..like love that closes its mouth before calling a name.”

Montgomery is interested in the manipulation of found paper centred on the behaviour of chance marks and stains. The results are images that describe a dialogue between the carefully chosen tools, media and surfaces she uses that express the above concerns. Woods has used silver gelatin glass plate prints on hand-made fibre based photosensitive paper. Using an outmoded printing technique and one hundred year old photographic plates taken by a friend’s uncle ‘Leo Hayes.’ She revisits an unknown past, expressing the loss of history through deterioration of object and memory.

6 – 19 June 2011

Opening: Monday 6 June 2011, 1pm

The Red Stables, brought to you by Dublin City Council, is delighted to present ‘What Alice Found There’, a site specific exhibition of temporary artworks devised and planned by invited curator, Deirdre Morrissey for the Emerging Curator Programme at The Red Stables.

‘What Alice found There’ is a temporary outdoor exhibition inspired by the nonsensical elements of the Lewis Carroll’s book ‘Alice, Through the Looking Glass’. Eleven artists have been chosen to create work that is engaged with notions of impossibility, the uncanny and the imaginary to create a labyrinth of site specific installations and live art. Participating artists are Catherine Barragry, Francis Fay & Mary B Keane, Michael Fortune, Carl Giffney, Jennie Guy & Claire Behan, Joan Healy, Maria Makrai, Niamh Murphy and Méabh Redmond.

The live art performances will take place on 6, 11, 12, 18 and 19 June. The other artwork can be found throughout the park and at The Red Stables exhibition space which opens from 2pm – 5pm everyday.

‘Anomalya II’

4 – 18 June 2011

Opening Reception: Saturday 4 June 2011, 2pm – 4pm

Italian born painter Danilo Quo Vadis has been interested in the underground creative scene since his teens. He paints on any material, depicting characters that ‘are left out of society’. He has instinctively developed his work on walls in abandoned and forgotten places, cinemas, clubs and squats from Krakow, Sarajevo, Lisbon and Berlin, preferring places where he has control over colours, music and space. He is a compulsive painter and has chosen to settle in Dublin,’ a place in which his characters, animals and views seem to find their colours, sustenance and smiles.

‘Anomalya’ is a momentary vision of estranged concepts, vivid sensations and soliloquy painted thoughts. This is atypical in the ‘street art scene’, devoid of icons and pop-up characters. It is a return to classical painting with an underground feeling.

The series of portraits painted on bread boards, are complex, severe and commanding and are the core of the show. The faces, proud of the wall surface, stare out into the show with an arrogance or fear. The images continue beyond the boundary of the board and wander freely over the walls. The paintings are segments of the greater whole; a small part of the bigger picture. Other works show Danilo Quo Vadis’ paint on found objects.

An exhibition to celebrate 10 years selling art at Greenacres Art Galleries.

4 June – 23 July 2011

Opening: Saturday 4 June 2011, 11:30am

This year Greenacres Art Galleries celebrates 10 years selling fine art in Wexford. To celebrate this special occasion an exhibition featuring three of our most distinguished artists will be on show. Since the gallery’s inception in 2001, Eamon Colman has exhibited consistently and was a great support to a completely unknown exhibition space at the back of a fine food and wine shop. A selection of work spanning 10 years will be on show along with more recent pieces. Eamon is also running a week long workshop in July for amateur and more experienced artists.

Gearoid Hayes, at only 31, has achieved a lot for his young years, having played underage rugby for Ireland and completing a Business and Law Degree at UCD. Following this, he went to Florence to do a summer art course. Gearoid has been exhibiting with Greenacres since his student days in Florence and in this show will be showing recent work along with unseen work painted since his return to Ireland. Gearoid’s workshop starts on 4 July and is aimed at experienced artists.

Eamonn O’Doherty is a sculptor, painter, photographer and an architect by trade having studied at UCD. He is probably best known for his public sculpture in Ireland, namely ‘Tree of Gold’ which proudly stands outside the Central Bank and the Anna Livia (known on the streets of Dublin as the Floozie in the Jacuzzi) which until 2001 sat snugly in the centre of O’Connell Street and now resides at the Croppy Acre Memorial Park near Hueston Station. Greenacres are thrilled to be exhibiting both sculpture and paintings by the artist. Some works are inspired by the great James Joyce and the exhibition coincides with Blooms Day and Eamonn’s birthday in mid-June.

‘Example: New Ways of Making and Presenting Visual Art’

Publication Launch and Exhibit by Malwina Ostrowska

Thursday 2 June 2011, 6pm

How could a gallery space be used to emphasise engagement over consumption? Instead of showing work that was indifferent to its surroundings, like objects in a shop window, Exchange Gallery (EG) functioned as a site of project development. EG provided the conditions for over 30 artists, theorists and musicians to develop, experiment, materialise and disseminate their work.

This exhibition is a presentation of this work and marks the launch of the new publication “E.G: Exchange Gallery; New Ways of Showing and Making Visual Art.” Assembled and designed by Malwina Ostrowska.

Lucy McKenna ‘The Darker Wood’

4 – 28 June 2011

Exhibition launch & Q&A session with the artist: Saturday 4 June 2011, 1pm

This is a multi media exhibition incorporating drawing, photography, installation & video. Lucy McKenna undertook a residency on Toronto Island in Canada during 2010. The work she created there was in response to the island itself, its history, architectural elements and landscape. Many of the trees that inhabited the island were quite old and had survived through a time of extreme trauma in the 1960′s when, due to a political decision, the island had been intentionally burned and wiped of almost all manmade and natural life. The injury and past lives of the trees affected her work heavily, as did exploring the darker side of the human psyche and the cross referencing of fairy tales. This body of work encapsulates the sense of foreboding, loss and desire contained in fairytales, emotions that are still as frequent and relevant in the modern world.

Graphic Studio Dublin at The Lavit Gallery

2 – 25 June 2011

Official opening by Dr. Sabine Kriebel, lecturer in History of Art at UCC: Thursday 2 June 2011, 8pm

The works in this exhibition are a selection of fine art prints from Graphic Studio Dublin’s Visiting Artists Programme. Since 1980, artists have been involved with this programme, which has seen International and Irish artists being invited to the studio to work with master printmakers developing a body of prints that expands the boundaries of their usual practices to include fine art prints. This creative collaboration manifests itself in special and often unexpected ways.

This exhibition includes a selection of some of Ireland’s most established painters, who have through this programme worked with the medium of printmaking. Work by Elizabeth Blackadder, Diana Copperwhite, William Crozier, Michael Cullen, Felim Egan, Martin Gale, Tim Goulding, Mary Lohan, Hughie O’ Donoghue, Gwen O’ Dowd, Jane O’ Malley, Tony O’ Malley, Geraldine O’ Neill, Barbara Rae and Donald Teskey will all be on display. The different printing techniques such as etching, lithography, screenprint and carborundum chosen by the artists to employ instead of painting often draws something new and surprising from them.

We are delighted to also announce that – Robert Russell – artist and studio director, will give a free print demonstration at the Lavit Gallery on Saturday 11 June at 12 noon. All are welcome but prior booking with the Lavit is advised, as places are limited.

‘Hearth’

25 May – 24 June 2011

‘Hearth’ is a new and exciting art programme for older people and is underway in Mayo. It is an initiative which has grown out of previous work that has been ongoing with older people in care settings throughout the county for the past ten years. The success of this work has led to the idea of bringing art to older people in their own homes – people who are isolated geographically or are restricted for other reasons. The programme targets rural isolation through the medium of creativity. The programme has taken form with the backing of artists Deirdre Walsh, Breda Mayock and Bernie Garvey O’Mara, and the Ballina Arts Centre.

‘Hearth’ aims to enable older people to find their creativity in a safe and non–judgemental environment. Each week an experienced artist travels to the home of the older person and facilitates one-to-one workshop there. The artist ensures monitoring of the work and encouragement on an ongoing basis, and cultivates a relationship of trust with the participant over time. This process is different to an art class or art therapy format. From the beginning, freedom from expectation is paramount. Preconceived ideas of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ are left behind so that, with time, the individual comes in contact with the artist in themselves in a natural and organic manner. ‘Hearth’ enables the discovery of their creativity in the safety of their own home.

‘Hearth’ is supported by Atlantic Philanthropies and Southwest Mayo Leader.

‘New Works’: Jane O’Malley

2 June – 2 July 2011

Opening: Thursday 2 June 2011, 8pm

John F. Deane, author & poet, will perform the opening ceremony.

Hamilton Gallery is delighted to host an exhibition of new works by Jane O’Malley. O’Malley was born in Montreal. In 1973 she married artist Tony O’Malley and lived in St. Ives, Cornwall, until 1990, when they then moved permanently to Ireland. On working holidays they travelled to the Isles of Scilly, the Bahamas, and the Canary Islands. Inspiration for her work comes from these landscapes, and the objects she has collected on her travels: native jugs and vases, a carved spoon, fruit from the garden. These are then distilled and arranged, giving them a simple presence and the weight of accumulated memory.

The Aughty regions of County Galway

Official launch: 7 June 2011, 9am at The Huntsman Inn, Galway

“The best public art piece… ever.” – Alice Maher, Artist

“The artist has combined an icon of ancient Ireland with an icon of contemporary Ireland, playfully re-presenting elements of Irish culture, often over-used commercially to attract tourism, in an accessible, witty, and visually arresting way.” – Kernan Andrews, Galway Advertiser

The Poulnabrone Bouncy Dolmen by Jim Ricks is a monumental inflatable sculpture designed for members of the public, of all ages, to interact with. The artwork will be touring venues around the Aughty Region of County Galway during June of 2011. The Poulnabrone Bouncy Dolmen is a replica, at twice the scale, of the famous 6,000 year old megalithic portal tomb of the same name, which is located in the Burren, Co. Clare. Jim Ricks created the interactive soft sculpture with the intention of bringing a portal dolmen to Aughty, a region which has no dolmens, only wedge tombs.

The official launch of The Poulnabrone Bouncy Dolmen will be on 7 June 2011 in front of the Huntsman Inn in Galway. The piece will be set up first thing in the morning (weather permitting) followed by a small reception at 9am. It will be touring the Slieve Aughty region of Galway for 2 weeks. The tour will close with an afternoon appearance adjacent to the real Poulnabrone Dolmen in the Burren, on the 21 June solstice.

‘Dreaming Places’ A project powered by dreams

3 June – 12 July 2011

Contemporary Artists Claire Coté and Anna Keleher are to spend 40 days and 40 nights of action research and experiment above and below ground at Marble Arch Caves Geopark this summer. They will be meeting the people, places and things of these ancestral homelands between 3 June – 12 July 2011. Supported by Marble Arch Caves Geopark and funded by National Lottery through Arts Council England this project seeks to enrich relationships with natural, social and cultural ecologies.

Anna and Claire’s successful international collaborative partnership began at Dartington College of Art in 2007 when they both enrolled on the innovative M.A. Arts and Ecology course at Dartington College of Arts. When Claire finished her studies and had to return home to her native New Mexico they vowed they would meet up again, but this time in Ireland where they would further research prehistoric ecologies. Together these innovative artists will explore the natural and cultural heritage of Marble Arch Caves Geopark investigating Dúlra – ecosystem, Dúchas – heritage and Aisling- dream. “We are devising a special tool-kit of adventurous processes, novel techniques and gentle interactions to gather data from the borders of the unknown” says Anna Keleher about their upcoming residency.

Anna and Claire make audio journeys, radio broadcasts, drawings, sculptural installations and performative events. The outcomes from the ‘Dreaming Place’ Marble Arch Caves Geopark residency will be shared with diverse communities, both local and international through their blog, live events and exhibitions.

‘The Tenderness of Attention’ by Melita Denaro

3 – 25 June 2011

‘The Tenderness of Attention’ is an exhibition in two parts by Melita Denaro taking place at the John Martin Gallery from 3 – 25 June in London and then at Taylor Galleries in Dublin from 10 June – 2 July 2011.

The exhibition features a series of new paintings on board and canvas that explore the artist’s connection with the dramatic landscape of the Isle of Doagh in Clonmany, Co. Donegal. The intimate and personal sense of place that Melita captures in her work is paralleled in the detailed descriptions that she uses to title her paintings, which Charles Tyrrell describes in the accompanying catalogue as ‘real, robust, straight from the hip, straight from the heart… Dramatic, quick, bold and brave.’

4 June – 27 November 2011

Corban Walker will represent Ireland at the 54th Venice Biennale. His exhibition in the Irish pavillion will feature three works, Modular, Transparent Wall and Please Adjust (all 2011). The curator for the Irish pavillion is Eamonn Maxwell and the commissioner is Emily-Jane Kirwan.

Walker is known for his sculptures and installations relating to architectural scale and spatial perception and utilizing industrial materials like steel, aluminum, and glass. Standing only four feet tall, Walker explores minimalism from his unique point of view. The installations respond to rule-based, mathematical principles that derive from Walker’s own height and correlate to the experience of navigating a world that has been designed for others. The works at the Pietà interact with the historic architecture of the Pavilion and are all, in some way, transparent. It intrigued Walker that the Pavilion is open at both ends, with each end offering a different destination, the canal or a garden. There is no front or back, and no beginning or end. In the past, Walker has used transparent materials like glass and Plexiglas to create sculptures; this time, the installation itself will be transparent though the actual materials — metal and v! inyl — are opaque.
